Stephen Kesting is pretty darn good at leading the way in jits if you ask me. His latest email "assignment" to this mailing list I am on is: list at least two "answers" to each of the following questions. Care to repost this on your blog, or in the comments? Or at least feel free to snark in response to my attempts! :)

Closed guard passes: knee-through, low pass, double-under
Closed guard sweeps: pendulum, whitebelt-killer
Open guard submissions: reverse armbar, omoplata

I Like this! Makes you think... I'll put my additions in parentheses after yours.
------------
Closed guard submissions: numerous gi chokes, triangle, armbar (using "numerous" wasn't fair, georgette...)
Closed guard passes: knee-through, low pass, double-under (Robson Moura gi-over-arm)]
Closed guard sweeps: pendulum, whitebelt-killer (scissor, flower, Roger Gracie's tip-them-over from 2008 worlds)
Open guard submissions: reverse armbar, omoplata, (additional triangle setups like Ryan Hall's)

Open guard sweeps: scissor, push, elevator (butterfly, spider guard sweep left/right)
Half guard submissions: americana, pillow choke, Dave Camarillo far side armbar, reverse triangle, lapel ezekiel, arm triangle)

Side mount submissions: americana, papercutter, (near/far arm bar, bow-and-arrow choke, arm triangle)

Side mount escapes: elbow-knee; needle through to knees, (Saulo running escape, turtle)
Knee mount submissions: baseball bat choke, armbar (uhh...)
Knee mount transitions: ummm.... mount, N/S (side control)
Knee mount escapes: oh I'm bad at this. Shrimp like hell, or on lighter peeps, flip them over with your arm under their base ankle (Saulo running escape)
Full mount submissions: chokes, armbars, (americana, ezekiel, cross-collar, arm bar, reverse triangle, arm triangle)
Full mount transitions: not really sure what they mean (taking the back)
Full mount escapes: elbow-knee back to guard, upa roll (over-the-head hip lift, feet in the armpits)
Rear mount submissions: Fredson, 4-finger, RNC, armbar (bow-and-arrow)
Rear mount transitions: to mount (side control, N/S)
Rear mount escapes: roll into guard, slide down and out (back to the mat)
Turtle submissions: toehold (to person turtling), kneebar (from inside turtle), (RNC, bow-and-arrow)
Turtle transitions: uhhhh....
Turtle escapes: roll to guard, (shoot half guard/guard from underneath)
Sigh :)
This is a good gameplan. The only thing I can add is a few things for the turtle (I play a lot from turtle because 1) turtling up from a guard pass gives the guy an advantage, but finishing the pass gives him 3 points, and 2) I can escape/transition way more easilly out of turtle than I can from under side control.)
From top turtle, a great submission to use is the clock choke (it's in the Sperry DVDs).
From the bottom, if you can trap the far elbow, roll over your far shoulder and take them with you into side control. If not, there's a wrestling move called a Granby Roll that works great (as long as you are finish properly so they can't take your back).
Pete-- that's good advice. I have to admit, I haven't watched the Sperry dvds yet... I'm just overwhelmed and undertimed. But I realized not many people play turtle (that I've rolled with) and I ought to include those options in my mental gameplan.... thanks :)
1. Wondering if you could explain the "white belt killer" sweep?
2. I like using turtle as an escape from getting passed, particularly when someone's using an arm-under or double-under pass. It's natural to just take that all the way over to turtle, and in the scramble you can generally shoot your leg back in for half guard if you keep rolling through.
I pulled off a move I've seen before (but never executed) the other day when my opponent used the arm-under pass, I turtled, then shot back into half guard, but because of the turtle starting position, I already had the underhook on his arm, so just kept moving straight through to take his back. It felt great, and it's a sequence that I plan on continuing to use.
Turtle is also one of a couple great options from Saulo's running escape, which is WELL worth your time to watch the 10-minute video segment on. You can go right to a granby roll, or go to turtle and THEN granby (or shoot back to half guard).
It's becoming a larger part of my bottom game as a transition.
Awesome arsenal. It's funny how so many things in BJJ don't have names so we just make up descriptions.
the funniest part for me, training under a brazilian with very limited english, is when i ask him what that move he just did was, he says "choke". the next move he shows has a completely different setup, execution, grips, and position afterwards..."hey what is that called?". "choke".
