Gonna go to Pan Ams.

I haven't bought my ticket yet, but yes, I'm going. Just a little frustrated with the Southwest Airlines website tonight, trying to access my Rapid Rewards account, so I'm tired and done with the stupid thing. I know when I am better rested, the mysteries of changing that password and seeing if I have a free ticket will be less mysterious.

Not quite sure if I want to look at the IBJJF website and see the list of how many and who will be competing in my weight class. It won't make a difference to me-- if the number is tiny, I know people will be signing up last minute, and if it's a big number, that's just more time to stress and heck, I'm definitely going, so why freak out early?

Rita came up from Corpus this weekend and stayed with me; she did yesterday's noon class and will be rolling with me tomorrow morning as well. She's a tough, but tiny, blue belt from Gracie Barra and I'm happy she's not in my weight class!

She has a little, possible fracture or dislocation going on, so it's not entirely clear whether she'll actually train tomorrow. Sucks... less than 4 weeks to go and healing in time is a question....

Speaking of weight classes, I went to the gym and got the Bod Pod thing done-- it's a body fat % analysis that is almost as accurate as the whole water displacement thing, but it uses air instead and takes less time. Short version, I'm 22% body fat (not 26%, clinically obese like the generic websites say) and right at the top of the "lean" category... which is 22-18%. If I get down to 18% I'll still weigh 132, a perfectly comfortable number for the leve class. I used to weigh 120, but at my current level of muscle mass, to weigh 120 I'd have to have under 10% body fat. This was actually reassuring because it gave me permission to stop pushing for that number :)

Good training lately. Going back for more tomorrow.

Which gym has the bod pod? Castle Hill?

1) YAY for Pan Ams. I'm still working on my angle. I'll let you know. Now I REALLY need to get off my ass, though. How else are we supposed to bump patches?

2) Bod Pod is not as accurate as water displacement. That's okay - just don't get worried about it.

Georgette...where did you go for the Bod Pod? There aren't any down here in San Antonio and I have been wanting to try it out. What did they charge? Do you feel they did a good job? Thanks...Ben

My gym, Castle Hill Fitness on Lamar Blvd., has one. It was $50 but they'll apply that to a package price (3 tests for $120) if/when you come back for another. It was fast, easy, painless... hard to say if it was a good job, though I will say I think it must be more accurate than the kind where you measure your wrist, neck and waist circumference...

But as far as accuracy of the Bod Pod goes-- when used with female athletes-- one study noted:

"In the course of this study, the researchers unearthed some interesting differences in body composition between the [80 female college] athletes. The track athletes were by far the leanest, with an average body fat percentage of 15.7 (measured by hydrostatic weighing). The slimmest 75% of the track athletes averaged an even trimmer 13.6% body fat. By contrast, the women in every other sport checked in with average body fat percentages of 21 or more; the heftiest being the volleyball players and rowers, with average body-fat levels above 22%.

As it turned out, there was no significant difference between the hydrostatic-weight and skin-fold estimations of body fat, but percent body fat measured by the Bod Pod was significantly higher than by either of the others; (remember that hydrostatic weighing is considered the ‘gold standard’). This overestimation by the Bod Pod was a factor even when the athletes were divided into lean and normal subsets; the Bod Pod tacked on about 2% of extra body fat in the general population (from the 19% determined by hydrostatic weighing to 21%) and 3% in the leaner athletes (from 14 to 17%). The researchers concluded that the Bod Pod (and [air displacement] in general) may not be valid tools for measuring percent body fat in female athletes, especially the leaner ones."

Man, I am really curious to see what my body fat percentage would be.I think you're right not to stress over 120. I've always had a muscular frame and so I'm always heavier than other girls who look comparable to me in size.
